VSME standard — What is it and why is it important for small and medium-sized enterprises?

VSME standard: What is VSME?

The Voluntary Sustainability Standard for SMEs (VSME) is a voluntary standard that provides small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with a practice-oriented basis for sustainability reporting. VSME is particularly beneficial for SMEs that act as suppliers to companies subject to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). It enables these companies to meet sustainability standards, increase their competitiveness and create transparency for business partners and investors.

The VSME offers SMEs standardized yet flexible reporting that meets the requirements of large business partners. Currently, the exchange often takes place via structured questionnaires or audits, which enable companies subject to CSRD to assess the sustainability performance of their suppliers. With VSME, SMEs can replace these individual inquiries with a uniform report that contains all relevant information. This simplifies communication, reduces administrative costs and strengthens the trust of investors, customers and other stakeholders.

An overview of the most important benefits:

  • Increase transparency: The VSME provides a clear reporting structure to systematically present sustainability performance and effectively communicate relevant information.
  • Strengthen competitiveness: By meeting sustainability requirements, SMEs improve their market position and facilitate partnerships with larger companies.
  • Increase efficiency: Structured reporting helps SMEs save resources and optimize internal processes.
  • Reduce bureaucracy: The VSME is specifically adapted to the capacities of SMEs, which makes reporting less complex and time-consuming.
  • Improve risk management: The standard helps to identify and systematically manage sustainability risks at an early stage, which increases the resilience of the company.
  • Improve creditworthiness: Sustainability-oriented companies have better chances of lending as a result of VSME reporting, as banks increasingly use ESG data for evaluation.
  • Promote employer branding and employee loyalty: VSME-compliant work can increase the company's attractiveness as an employer and helps attract and retain talent in the long term.
  • Preparing for regulatory changes: By proactively engaging with VSME, SMEs are better equipped to assert themselves in a changing regulatory environment.

Which data is required?

The VSME requirements include a range of data that must be systematically collected and evaluated:

  • General company information: Company profiles, locations and significant changes in the reporting period.
  • Governance data: Information on corporate governance, responsibilities and internal control mechanisms.
  • Environmental data: Data on energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption.
  • Social data: Working conditions, human rights and fair wages.
  • Supply chain data: Information on suppliers' compliance with environmental and social standards.
Even though SMEs are not yet legally required to report on sustainability, business partners or customers can request this information now. If your company works closely with larger, reportable partners, you should learn about the VSME standard as soon as possible. This allows you to react specifically to requirements and optimally prepare for any inquiries.

VSME modules at a glance

The VSME consists of two modules that build on each other and enable companies to flexibly adapt their reporting:

  • Basic module: This module contains basic principles and requirements for sustainability reporting. It comprises eleven disclosure points that focus on environmental, social and governance issues, such as energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and the fight against corruption. There is no need for a materiality analysis, so companies can start reporting quickly and easily.
  • Comprehensive module: Based on the basic module, this module extends reporting to include more detailed requirements. It includes additional disclosure points that are likely to be requested by banks, investors and business partners, such as information on greenhouse gas reduction targets, transition plans for climate change, and climate risks. This module enables companies to provide more comprehensive and in-depth reporting.

Importance of the materiality analysis for SMEs

Although the materiality analysis is voluntary, it is a decisive element of VSME. It helps SMEs to identify the most important environmental and social issues and to take targeted action. Used correctly, it can significantly shape sustainability strategy in the long term and secure strategic advantages.

Conclusion: VSME as a competitive advantage for SMEs

The VSME standard Gives small and medium-sized enterprises the opportunity to substantially dealing with their impact on the environment and society — and significant at the same time Cost and competitive advantages to achieve. Who his Optimized processes, Minimizes Risk Factors and Communicates Credibly, Establishes a Culture of Responsibility and creates trust in Customers, employees and Financial Partners.
